Why Does My Heat Pump Blow Cold in Heating Mode?
Your heat pump in Pine Bluff, AR, is responsible for keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Here are a few possible explanations for why your heat pump may be expelling cool air while ostensibly in heating mode:
Refrigerant Leak
To work its magic, every heat pump must have enough refrigerant. While in heating mode, heat pumps use refrigerant to absorb heat from outdoor, condense the refrigerant and release the stored heat indoors.
If refrigerant begins to leak from your HVAC system, there won’t be enough left for it to do this work. As a consequence, your heat pump may not be able to heat your home and may instead end up blowing cool air. Since refrigerant is a dangerous substance, you’ll need to request a repair or tuneup from a trained service tech to replenish any of it that your system has lost.
Faulty Outdoor Condenser Unit
Another possibility is that there’s some kind of problem with your heat pump’s outdoor condenser unit, which contains the evaporator coil while the system is in heating mode. The outdoor condenser unit may be full of debris, covered in ice or damaged in some way. This is a problem for a professional service tech to find and fix.
Stuck in Defrost Mode
Occasionally, exceptionally cold weather may cause ice to spring up on the outdoor portion of your heat pump. Heat pumps can enter defrost mode when they need to melt this ice, during which they will expel heat outdoors. This can at least temporarily preclude them from sending heat into your home.
Heat pumps shouldn’t blow cool air while in heating mode. Call Pine Bluff Heating & Air and request heating services for a professional heat pump repair. We’ll restore your system’s capacity in no time.
